How to Use the Generator
This tool is designed to help families quickly create a written request for a comprehensive special education evaluation under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).
Please follow the steps below carefully before submitting your request.
Step 1: Complete All Required Student Information
Enter your child’s information exactly as you would want it to appear in a formal email to the school team. This includes your child’s name, age, school, and your contact email address.
Your email address is important because the completed letter will be sent directly to you after submission.
Step 2: Describe Your Concerns
In the “Reason for Request” section, briefly describe the concerns you have about your child’s learning, behavior, development, communication, health, or school performance.
You do not need legal language. Simply explain what you are seeing and why you believe an evaluation is needed.
Step 3: Select All Areas of Suspected Disability
Check all eligibility categories that may apply to your child.
You do not need to know your child’s eligibility category with certainty. This section simply helps request evaluation in all appropriate areas.
The generator will automatically add recommended assessment components based on your selections.
Step 4: Submit the Form
After submitting:
✅ Your completed evaluation request letter will be emailed directly to you.
Please allow a few minutes for delivery.
⚠️ Important:
Check your Spam/Junk folder if you do not see the email in your inbox.
Step 5: Review and Edit Your Letter Before Sending
This generator helps create a strong starting point, but you should always review the letter before sending it to the school.
Please:
- Proofread the letter carefully
- Confirm all student information is correct
- Remove any duplicate assessment items that may appear when multiple eligibility areas are selected. This site is a work in progress, and while I’m a strong advocate, I’m only a modest web designer.
- Add any additional details you would like the school team to know
While this tool is built using advocacy best practices, automated systems are not perfect.
Step 6: Send the Letter to Your School
Copy the completed letter from your email and send it to:
- Your child’s principal
- Your child’s current teacher
- School counselor or special education contact (If known)
Sending the request by email helps create a clear written record and starts important legal timelines.
